90-storey tower in Melbourne to go-ahead

Feb 11, 2017 – The Victorian government has given the green light to Crown Melbourne’s hotel and apartment complex in Melbourne’s Southbank, Australia.

The project, designed by WilkinsonEyre, will involve the construction of a new 90-storey tower — expected to be the tallest tower in Australia. The project will feature a 388-room, six-star hotel and 708 residential apartments.

Premier Daniel Andrews said: “This is a bold transformation of Melbourne’s skyline that will build on our state’s reputation as the nation’s leader for tourism.”

In addition, Crown Melbourne and partner Schiavello have committed to invest $100M in a community benefits package.

The package includes a $25M upgrade to Queensbridge Square that includes landscaping and two new cafes, a $15M upgrade to the Sandbridge Rail Bridge, landscaping and public realm improvements on Southbank Boulevard, and street furniture and additional trees along Queensbridge Street.

Minister for planning Richard Wynne said: “This is a great outcome for Victoria. It’s a jobs and economic windfall for the state, and the community benefits package will be great news for this iconic part of Melbourne.”

The project is expected to create 3,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction, and a further 1,000 operational jobs.
