Aecom wins role on £60m Bangor Waterfront project in UK
September 20, 2019 – US-based infrastructure firm Aecom has been selected by Ards and North Down Borough Council in Northern Ireland, UK as a consultant for its £60m Bangor Waterfront project.
The project calls for the development of new public realm along the 2.2-mile stretch as well as new greenways and coastal paths.
Plans also include the enhancement of Pickie Park to a family visitor attraction of national significance and compliment the re-imagining of Ballyholme beach.
Aecom UK and Ireland masterplanning lead director Patrick Clarke said: “Building on the ambitious waterfront plan for Bangor, our team brings a breadth of multidisciplinary expertise to further develop this vision, creating a masterplan that will secure long-term tourism and economic benefits for the town and a business case to support future investment in Bangor.
“Our team will deliver an integrated design approach including masterplanning, architecture, landscape and public realm design, transport, engineering, tourism planning, economics and sustainability services, with creative input from Hemingway Design and its impressive track record in coastal regeneration.”
The project will also call for the redevelopment of Ballyholme Yacht Club into Northern Ireland’s only centre of excellence for sailing.
The Aecom-led team for the Bangor Waterfront project comprise Hemingway Design, Savills and Jettora.
Hemingway Design official Wayne Hemingway said: “Collaborative design is crucial to us, so we want to gain input from the local community as much as possible through our digital survey and public engagement sessions.”
The Bangor Waterfront Project will receive approximately £40m from Westminster while the remaining will be provided by both the Council and the private sector.
Recently, Aecom was selected to lead the design of the new sports venue, Inglewood Basketball & Entertainment Center, in Inglewood, California, US.
The new arena, which will be home to the American professional basketball team L.A. Clippers, will feature a multi-purpose plaza, complete with a concert stage, community basketball courts and space for the community to gather.
