Alinta Energy begins construction on 214MW wind farm in Australia


August 09, 2019 – Sydney-based Alinta Energy has broken ground on the 214MW Yandin wind farm in the Shire of Dandaragan, Western Australia.

The wind farm will be located about 175km north of Perth and will be powered by 51 Vestas’ 4.2MW turbines. Alinta Energy will invest nearly A$400m (£222.7m) in the wind farm.

Once completed, the wind farm will generate enough clean electricity to be supplied to more than 200,000 homes and is also claimed to be the largest renewable energy plant in the state.

More than 50,000 tonnes of turbines and machinery will be transported to the site in the first half of 2020.


Nearly 150 jobs could be created during the construction phase, as the project will require nearly one million hours of labour.

Alinta Energy merchant energy executive director Ken Woolley said: “Today we’re saying thanks to the landowners, local community and others that helped us get to this point. We’re on track to have the wind farm up and running by the second half of 2020.

“Western Australia has some tremendous renewable energy resources, and we believe the Yandin Wind Farm will harness one of the best, if not the best wind resource in the country.

“I’m also happy to announce the we’re about to open up applications for a community fund that will contribute at least $50,000 to projects and groups within the Shire of Dandaragan each year.

“The fund will be split into two rounds a year of $25,000 each, with further details available on the project website.”

The power generated from the wind farm will be supplied to Western Power’s 330kV electricity network via a new 10km transmission line and terminal station which will be built, owned and operated by Western Power.

Earlier this year, Danish wind turbine-maker Vestas was selected by Alinta Energy to supply its V150-4.2 MW turbines and provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the project.

Turbines with hub height reaching 105m were selected for maximum performance at the site’s specific wind conditions.

Vestas has also agreed to support operations through a 25-year Active Output Management 4000 (AOM 4000) service agreement for optimised performance of the wind farm. The agreement includes scheduled and unscheduled maintenance of the wind turbines, electrical and civil balance of plant.
