Amazon plans first fulfilment centre in Idaho, US
October 15, 2019 – Online retail giant Amazon has announced plans to build the first fulfilment centre in Nampa, Idaho.
Being developed in partnership with Pannotoni Development, the new fulfilment centre is expected to be opened in 2020. The centre is expected to generate more than 1,000 full-time jobs alongside Amazon’s robotics.
The 650,000ft² fulfilment centre will fulfil customer orders such as books, electronics and toys.
Amazon global customer fulfilment vice president Alicia Boler Davis said: “We’re excited to open our first customer fulfillment center in Idaho and to bring more than 1,000 full-time jobs to the city.
“Amazon is committed to creating a positive economic impact in Nampa and enhancing the customer experience throughout the region.”
Idaho Governor Brad Little said: “Amazon’s investment in Nampa will add job opportunities for our citizens and create a ripple effect of economic activity throughout the region.
“The investment demonstrates that Idaho’s workforce and economy continue to attract the ideas and businesses that thrive in a knowledge-based economy. We are proud that Amazon chose Idaho to expand and do business.”
The company said that all associates will be imparted safety training and ongoing coaching and will also be given access to continuing education opportunities through Amazon’s upskilling programmes such as Career Choice.
Nampa Mayor Debbie Kling said: “I would like to thank Amazon for choosing Nampa to locate their newest fulfillment center. Their investment in local transportation improvements and a competitive employment package represents a significant opportunity for our community.
“The City of Nampa will do everything we can to support the expedited construction timeline and we look forward to being part of the Amazon family.”
In September 2019, Amazon announced the expansion of its Chicago Tech Hub and planned to create 400 new tech jobs in the fields of cloud computing, advertising and business development.
To accommodate the positions, the online retailer said that it is expanding its office in downtown Chicago by more than 70,000ft², allowing it to double its tech workforce in the city.
Amazon’s Chicago Tech Hub is one of the company’s 18 North American Tech Hubs, a network of development centres, in addition to its Seattle and Arlington, Virginia headquarters.
The hubs employ more than 20,000 people supporting Amazon customers around the world. Chicago-based Amazon teams are developing products and services for Amazon Web Services (AWS), Amazon Advertising, and the company’s Transportation and Operations units.
