Balfour Beatty JV wins £552m theatre contract in Hong Kong

Balfour

November 30, 2018 – Gammon Construction, a 50:50 Far East joint venture of Balfour Beatty and Jardine Matheson, has won an HKD5.5bn (£551.9m) works contract (L2) of the Lyric Theatre Complex and extended basement for the final stage of the theatre development in Hong Kong.

The contract has been awarded by the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority (WKCDA).

Work includes the construction of a modern theatre complex, which consists of a 1,450-seat lyric theatre, a 600-seat medium theatre and a 270-seat studio theatre, in addition to dance and rehearsal studios, offices, restaurants and information and ticketing centre.

Gammon secured contracts for the first two phases of the development of the Lyric Theatre Complex in 2016.

In January 2018, Gammon secured another contract to deliver the public infrastructure and extended basement works.

The third contract is the third and final stage of the development.

Gammon will use ‘integrated digital project delivery’ system in line with Balfour Beatty’s ‘25 by 2025’ strategy, which targets a 25% reduction in activity onsite by 2025.

The company intends to achieve this by adopting modularisation and off-site manufacturing techniques, and using digital tools such as Building Information Modelling to improve quality, productivity and safety of works.

The Lyric Theatre Complex is located near the M+ Museum project for which Gammon was appointed as the management contractor by WKCDA in September 2018.

These two projects are part of the West Kowloon Cultural District development, which is aimed at establishing a cultural quarter on Hong Kong’s harbour front that blends art, education and public space.

Work is scheduled to commence in 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2023. Around 1,700 people will be employed at the peak of construction.

Gammon CEO Thomas Ho said: “We are delighted WKCDA has once again selected Gammon to work with them, for what will be the final stage of this world-class arts and cultural facility.

“Our skilled professionals will bring the level of service and quality necessary to realise the architect’s vision on this complex project, for the benefit of the dance and theatrical communities of Hong Kong and its patrons.”
