Balfour Beatty wins Jacksonville International Airport terminal expansion project
June 22, 2019 – UK-based construction firm Balfour Beatty has been awarded a contract by the Jacksonville Aviation Authority (JAA) for its terminal expansion project at Jacksonville International Airport (JIA).
Under the contract, Balfour Beatty will construct a new Concourse B that will add six gates. The expansion will help the airport to meet the growth in passenger traffic, including the 16% increase seen last year.
Furthermore, the UK-based construction firm will coordinate with JAA and the design team Jacobs/RS&H during the preconstruction phase to finalise the plans for the secondary areas of the terminal expansion.
The secondary areas of the expansion include concessions, airfield circulation and apron expansion, a third level for additional concessions and lounge space, administrative and operational areas, baggage system expansion, among other work.
The preconstruction phase of the project is scheduled to begin next month and the construction is expected to begin next summer. The entire project is scheduled to be completed in December 2022.
Balfour Beatty buildings operations in Florida president Scott Skidelsky said: “Our selection for this great project is a tribute to our aviation industry expertise and strong 19-year history with the Jacksonville Aviation Authority that has blossomed into a dynamic partnership.
“This is an exciting project for Jacksonville and our team is honoured to be their construction partner in delivering Concourse B to help meet the airport’s unprecedented growth in passenger traffic.”
Balfour Beatty claims that it is specialised in constructing terminal buildings, baggage handling systems, concessions and parking structures, which safely transport thousands of people to their destinations every day.
Its experience in the US aviation industry includes the delivery of Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, Washington Dulles International Airport, Los Angeles International Airport, Raleigh-Durham International Airport, Miami International Airport, among others.
Last month, the Jacksonville Aviation Authority selected the Jacobs/RS&H team for the design of the new Concourse B at the JIA.
In March 2019, JAA announced its plans to expand Concourse B at Jacksonville International Airport’s third terminal.
