BESIX wins contract for dam, hydro power station in Cameroon
August 15, 2018 – BESIX has won a contract to design and build the Nachtigal dam and hydroelectric power station on the River Sanaga, 65km north of Yaoundé in Cameroon, to increase the country’s supply of renewable energy.
BESIX, in partnership with French company NGE and Moroccan company SGTM, will participate in the electrification of the country with renewable energy produced for NHPC, whose shareholders are EDF International, the State of Cameroon and the International Finance Corporation.
One of the few public-private partnership (PPP) hydroelectric projects in sub-Saharan Africa, the Nachtigal amont hydropower project is expected to accelerate the achievement of Cameroon’s development goals, including access to electricity.
The dam will increase the country’s electricity generating capacity by 30%.
The contract involves designing and building a 2km, 14m-high dam in roller compacted concrete, a 3km supply canal and the civil engineering works of the hydroelectric power plant with seven 60MW turbines and water intake facilities.
Work will begin before the end of 2018 and is expected to last 57 months. The project will be financed by a pool of international and local lenders.

“With our participation in the Nachtigal hydropower project, we are proud to contribute to the development of sustainable solutions.”
Previously, PORR-Six Construct Joint Venture, a joint venture of PORR and BESIX subsidiary Six Construct, secured a contract from Dubai Municipality for the construction of a Deep Tunnel Storm Water System in Dubai.
Work has already begun on the project, which is intended to collect and transport groundwater and storm water runoff from the Dubai World Central area and adjacent communities. Two Earth Pressure Balanced Tunnel Boring Machines (EPB TBMs) will excavate a 10km tunnel with a boring diameter of 11.05m – the biggest TBMs ever utilised in the UAE.
The TBMs are expected to arrive in October 2018. The project is likely to be completed in time for the Expo 2020 in Dubai.
