Birmingham Council submits planning application for Commonwealth Games Village

Birmingham

August 21, 2018 – Birmingham City Council has submitted a planning application for the development of the residential element of the Commonwealth Games Village in Perry Barr, taking Birmingham’s plans to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games a step ahead.

The Commonwealth Games Village, to be located just off the A453 Aldridge Road, will be home to the athletes participating in the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The proposed village, to be built on the site of the old University of Central England (UCE) and former Birmingham City University (BCU) campus near Perry Barr greyhound stadium and the One Stop Shopping Centre, will be one mile from Alexander Stadium, which will play a key role during the games.

The village will accommodate the 6,500 athletes and officials coming to Birmingham in 2022.

After the games, the village will provide nearly 1,400 new homes across a range of tenures – social and affordable rent, homes for sale, and for private rent.

The project will also include an extra care village for older people and a community centre.

As part of the pre-application process, several meetings and drop-in sessions have been organised for residents and businesses located near the site to shape the plans.

Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chair John Crabtree said: “In the seven months since being awarded the 2022 Games there has been a lot of work done to prepare this planning application.

“Now is the time for anyone with an interest in the regeneration of Perry Barr to look at our plans in detail and give feedback to the city council planners.

“We want the people of the West Midlands to have ownership of the games and this is one of the first significant ways in which they can do that.”

The village is expected to act as a catalyst for significant housing growth in Perry Barr as the first phase of a wider programme to deliver up to 3,000 new homes in the area.
