Bournemouth Development secures planning permission for £150m Winter Gardens scheme


November 30, 2018 – Bournemouth Development Company has secured planning permission from the Bournemouth Council for a £150m scheme at the Winter Gardens site in Bournemouth, UK.

The Winter Gardens is a transformative scheme, which will combine new homes, leisure and social spaces. The site has been under-utilised in recent years.

This is one of the biggest schemes in Bournemouth, and it will generate new jobs, attract more visitors throughout the year, and make the town centre a more exciting and enjoyable place to visit for local residents, the council said.

Winter Gardens will consist of more than 350 new homes of a variety of sizes. It will also improve 225 public parking spaces that are currently on the Winter Gardens site.

The residential accommodation will be located in four multi-storey buildings of varying heights, set amidst landscaped grounds.

The four multi-storey buildings will accommodate 352 homes made up of a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom flats and some penthouse apartments.

The project offers nearly 600 car parking spaces, including the re-provision of 225 safe and secure public car parking spaces, almost all in a four-storey basement car park, and secure cycle parking areas.

Five units will be provided for high-quality restaurants along Exeter Road, and a new food store.


In addition to a family area, a new piazza will be constructed at the junction of Exeter and Cranborne Road, a linear park alongside Cranborne Road and other publicly accessible open spaces with outdoor cafés and children’s play areas.

As part of the Grand Garden Walk, a widened, landscaped pedestrian area will be provided along Exeter Road.


Local business organisations, including the Dorset Chamber of Commerce, Bournemouth Chamber of Commerce, the Dorset Local Enterprise Partnership, the Bournemouth Coastal BID, and the Bournemouth Towne Centre BID, have supported the Winter Gardens scheme.

Previously, Bournemouth Development Company has delivered student flats and parking in Madeira Road, housing in the Citrus Building at Horseshoe Common, and housing and parking at Berry Court on St Peter’s Road.
