Brasfield & Gorrie completes new facility at UAB
August 29, 2018 – Brasfield & Gorrie has completed the construction of a new facility that will accommodate the Collat School of Business and Bill L Harbert Institute for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), US.
The 108,000ft² building has been designed with input from students and community business leaders to enhance the learning experience while preparing students to work in modern business environments.
The building is located along the north side of University Boulevard between 12th and 13th streets south.
The $37.5m facility includes breakout rooms, innovation lab, classrooms designed for team-based learning, high-tech finance lab, sales role-playing rooms, an auditorium, a three-storey atrium, a career centre and study spaces.
Open seating areas throughout the building are aimed at promoting collaboration and a sense of community, affiliation and connection to UAB.
The facility houses administrative and student function space for the Collat School of Business and HIIE, as well as the Center for Sales Leadership, the Healthcare Leadership Academy, the Nielsen Innovation Lab and the Regions Institute for Financial Education.
The presence of these cross-discipline entities at one place is expected to foster collaboration and create a bridge between undergraduate and graduate students and the marketplace.
On the exterior, the architecture is in keeping with the recently completed Hill Student Center and soon-to-be completed School of Nursing.
The four-storey building has a traditional brick enclosure and conventional windows on the western and eastern elevations and the northern and southern elevations will be glass storefront.
The building has been designed so that all 100-plus offices have a window exposed to natural light from the exterior of the building.
The Coca-Cola UNITED Dining Alcove offers dining options for students, faculty and staff. The new Chad Thomas Hagwood Finance Lab will house the Green & Gold Fund, UAB’s student-run investment fund.
Blazer Pride Plaza, a landscaped courtyard on the east side of the building, leads to the main entrance of the Collat School of Business. The main entrance to the HIIE will be on the northern side of the building.
The auditorium in the basement includes a FEMA-rated storm shelter that can accommodate over 200 people in the event of severe weather.
Birmingham-based Williams Blackstock Architects and Robert AM Stern Architects of New York City served as the architects on this project.
Brasfield & Gorrie, the general contractor, self-performed all concrete work, including foundations, foundation walls and site hardscapes.
