Canada government approves $439M Towerbirch pipeline expansion
Mar 16, 2017 – The government of Canada has given the go-ahead to NOVA Gas Transmission’s (NGTL) $439M Towerbirch Expansion Project.
The project will involve the construction of two new pipeline sections totaling about 87km and associated facilities in northwest Alberta and northeast British Columbia.
Nearly 82% of the project will parallel existing rights-of-way or existing disturbances, while 89% will be located on private land.
The government took into consideration the National Energy Board’s recommendation report on the project, the Environment and Climate Change Canada’s assessment of upstream greenhouse gas emissions and the views of Canadians gathered through an online questionnaire and enhanced consultations with Indigenous peoples.
Canada minister of natural resources, Jim Carr, said: “Approving the Towerbirch Expansion Project subject to binding conditions reflects the Government’s principled approach to developing and transporting Canada’s natural resources in a way that creates jobs and protects the environment.”
The project is subject to 24 binding conditions, and it is anticipated to create up to 750 jobs during the construction phase.
