CEB to buy solar generated power from households
Dec 22, 2016 – The Ceylon Electricity Board has decided to purchase power generated by solar from households, Power and Renewable Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P.Perera said.
Speaking to Daily News at the opening of the LOLC Group’ Sagasolar Power solar power plant in Baruthankanda, Hambantota, he said they will purchase at the rate of Rs. 22 per unit in the first seven years.“This is to encourage the public to invest in solar energy in a big and also get financial returns for their investment.”
After the seven year period, the CEB will purchase a unit from households at Rs. 15.50 as the capital will be covered by then.”Currently solar energy used electricity bill is subsidised and no payments are made.
Perera said the target of the country is to powered only by solar, wind hydro and other alternative power sources by 2050 with no diesel and coal being used. “The government will also stop investing in power generation and allow the private sector to invest and also buy power from them.” (SS)
