Chinese firm CNTC selected for Pixel mixed-use scheme in Abu Dhabi
August 22, 2019 – Abu Dhabi-based developer Imkan has selected Chinese construction company China Nantong Sanjian Construction Group (CNTC) as the main contractor for the Pixel, a 85,000m² mixed-use development in Abu Dhabi.
Designed by Dutch architectural firm MVRDV, the Pixel project is being developed in Makers District, a new development on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island.
Scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021, the Pixel mixed-use project will feature 525 apartments, shops, offices and amenities. All the apartments will feature fully equipped interiors, with the interior design led by MVRDV.
Dewan Architects is acting as the executive local architect of record, while Ramboll Middle East and Asia serves as engineer and project manager.
Danish Architects BIG designed the landscaping of Pixel’s central plaza along with the rest of The Artery, a pedestrian public space through Makers District that connects Pixel to the nearby beach.
Imkan CEO Walid El-Hindi said: “Our companies’ union mirrors the close relationship between the UAE and China.Abu Dhabi is a hub for global trade and the UAE is set to play a pivotal role in the China Belt and Road Initiative.”
CNTC vice-president Xinrong Xu said: “We welcome this collaboration. China and the UAE enjoy a symbiotic relationship that encompasses culture, investment and trade and is underpinned by a deep understanding of the important role we both play in the region’s economic development and prosperity.”
The development comprises seven mid-rise towers of varying heights for optimised views and shading. The towers with outward-facing façades are enriched with a 3D graphic pattern.
Additionally, the balconies are shaded by ceramic screens which are given a shimmering pearlescent finish.
MVRDV founding partner Jacob van Rijs said: “With Pixel, we wanted to show that a connection with the outdoors is not only possible in this city, but beneficial.
“The values of Makers District – creativity, learning, and sharing – are all at their core about people. So our design creates outdoor spaces with the pedestrian plaza and ‘pixel’ balconies to encourage a sense of community spirit, enabling this social and creative atmosphere.”
