October 11, 2019 – Contractors have been shortlisted for two tenders covering three projects for the A$1.75bn ($1.2bn) Regional Rail Revival programme in Victoria, Australia.
A joint initiative of the Australian and Victorian governments, the program aims to upgrade every regional passenger train line in the state of Victoria.
Rail Projects Victoria (RPV), on behalf of the State Government of Victoria, is responsible for the planning and implementation of the Regional Rail Revival programme.
Upgrades to the Bendigo and Gippsland lines is being tendered as a single package as both lines operate similar signalling systems, while the third project involves upgrades to the Shepparton Line.
For the Bendigo and Gippsland work, two consortia – VicConnect, comprising UGL, Decmil and Arup; and CPB Contractors, John Holland, WSP and SMEC – have been shortlisted.
Work under the Bendigo & Echuca Line upgrade project involves the installation of improved signalling from Bendigo to Eaglehawk and Epsom, to enable more frequent services.
Upgrades to the Gippsland Line between Pakenham and Traralgon are expected to reduce congestion points on the line and boost reliability.
Scope of work includes track duplication between Bunyip and Longwarry, additional platforms at key stations, an extended crossing loop, building a larger train stabling facility at or near Traralgon, signalling upgrades, drainage structure upgrades along the line, and building a new rail bridge over the Avon River in Stratford.
VicConnect and a joint venture between Coleman Rail and KBR have been shortlisted for stage two of the Shepparton Line Upgrade.
The Shepparton project involves level crossing upgrades, platform extensions, new stabling and a crossing loop extension.
Contracts are planned to be awarded in mid-2020. Subject to planning and environmental approvals, construction on all three lines is scheduled to commence in 2020.
