Dubai RTA launches $161m project to expand smart traffic systems
November 20, 2018 – The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) will undertake an AED590m ($161m) project to expand the smart traffic systems in support of efforts to rank Dubai as the smartest city worldwide and implement smart technologies and programmes to ease the mobility in Dubai.
The project involves upgrading and expanding the smart traffic systems by providing an integrated infrastructure of smart traffic systems in the Emirate, and the construction of a new traffic management system.
It will facilitate the management of traffic bottlenecks and accidents, increase the safety of road users, and ease personal mobility.
The initial stage of the project will be split into five key bundles due to the massive nature and technical sophistication of the project.
The first bundle covers traffic monitoring and data capturing systems, including cameras, vehicle detection devices and Bluetooth devices and weather sensors.
The second bundle covers information signs (dynamic messages) and will involve the installation of 112 sign boards providing instant information to drivers about the road condition.
The third bundle involves the construction of infrastructure such as civil works, fibre optic lines, and electricity distribution network spanning more than 400km.
The fourth bundle covers the advanced central traffic system, which will support decision taking, ensure an automatic response, and enable the integration with devices at site as well as other traffic centres and operations systems.
According to the RTA, the first phase will expand the coverage of smart traffic systems to 60% of Dubai roads network.
The fifth bundle covers the construction of a Traffic Control Center at Al Barsha South to cater to the projected increase in the current and future smart traffic systems.
To keep pace with the expansion of the Smart Traffic Systems in Dubai, the new centre will be constructed in the middle of the Emirate.
It will be feature the highest international standards of control centres, including devices and mega display monitors.
