Egis-led consortium wins role on $5.6bn Seine-Nord Europe Canal project in France
December 10, 2019 – French construction and engineering group Egis-led One consortium has secured a contract to manage the construction of two main sectors of the €5.1bn ($5.6bn) Seine-Nord Europe Canal in France.
The Seine-Nord Europe Canal project involves the construction of 107km inland waterway link extending from France to Belgium and connecting the Seine basin to the Rhine basin and the main 20,000km European waterway network.
The 54m-wide, 4.5m-deep canal will feature six locks, 61 road and rail bridges, four multimodal platforms, five cereal quays, two transhipment quays, one water storage reservoir, among others.
Under the terms of the nine-year contract, the consortium will be responsible for comprehensive engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) and managing the two main sectors of the project. The consortium comprises Ingérop, ISL, SBE, MDP et NEY & Partners.
The scope of work, including the construction of many highly technical works and structures, is for the Seine-Nord Europe Canal’s 48km-long Sector 2 running from Passel to Allaines, as well as 28km-long Sector 4 running from Etricourt-Manancourt to Aubencheul-au-Bac.
Egis said that the project involves digging 55 million cubic metres of earth and waterproofing 4.5 million m² of canal floor and walls.
More than 60 experts from the various companies in the consortium will be working on the project, which will meet the Building Information Modelling (BIM) standards.
Egis said in a statement: “The project engineers face significant challenges in their project management to control costs, meet deadlines and coordinate all the different forms of expertise and engineering trades.”
The project will replace the existing Canal du Nord, part of the Canal latéral à l’Oise in Northern France. It aims to shift freight from road to water, reducing the congestion of the French A1 motorway and CO2 emissions.
“The Seine-Nord Europe Canal is also designed to reflect a powerful environmental integration and sustainability approach, encompassing the protection of water resources, landscape integration, the limitation of the energy footprint, the preservation and enhancement of the living environment, project cost control and the development of the local economy,” Egis said.
