October 10, 2017 – Social media giant Facebook is set to invest around $1bn to build its new data centre in the White Oak Technology Park in Virginia, US.

According to the plan, Facebook will directly spend $750m to set up a 970,000 sq ft data centre while the balance $250m will be invested to construct multiple solar facilities that will power the data centre.

The project will create thousands of construction jobs to the region and over 100 full-time operational jobs.

Virginia governor McAuliffe said: “I am proud to welcome Facebook to Henrico County, and we look forward to a strong partnership. When an industry giant like Facebook selects Virginia for a major operation, it’s proof that our efforts to build an open and welcoming economy that works for everyone are paying off.”

Facebook director of data centre strategy Rachel Peterson said: “Virginia has been a home to the Internet since the tech industry’s earliest days.

“When considering new data center locations, we not only look for clean and renewable energy solutions, but great partnerships within the local community, a strong pool of local talent, excellent access to fibre, and a robust electric grid. Henrico County and the Commonwealth of Virginia has it all.”

Construction of data centre will create up to 1,688 jobs in the region.
