Granite JV bags $441m design-build transit project in Washington, DC

August 03, 2017 – A joint venture (JV) of Granite Construction and Archer Western has bagged South Capitol Street Corridor Phase 1 design-build contract from the District of Columbia Department of Transportation.

The bridge, which will replace the existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge over the Anacostia River in Washington, DC, will entail an investment of $441m.

Once completed, the bridge will feature six lanes, and improved bicycle and pedestrian facilities.

Under the terms of the agreement, the JV will be responsible for the construction of two new approach ovals and the reconstruction of a portion of I-295 adjacent to the new bridge.

Designed to transform South Capitol Street into a scenic boulevard, the project will improve pedestrian and vehicular safety, multimodal transportation options, community accessibility while supporting economic development.

Construction on the project is expected to commence in July 2017 and will be completed in December 2021.

Granite is engaged in the construction of roads, tunnels, bridges, airports, and other infrastructure-related projects in the US. The firm also produces sand, gravel, and ready-mix and asphalt concrete.
