Hensel Phelps secures $327m design-build contract from Nashville airport

November 16, 2018 – American construction company Hensel Phelps has won a $327m design-build contract from Nashville International Airport (BNA) for the terminal lobby and International Arrivals Facility (IAF) project.

The contract is for the largest component ofBNA Vision, the growth and expansion plan for Nashville International Airport, which was launched in July 2016.

Construction will begin in 2019 and is expected to be completed in 2023.

The 440,000ft² project involves expanding and renovating the airport’s lobby, and building a modern IAF to increase capacity to accommodate more international travel.

The terminal lobby’s ceiling will be elevated, a distinctive, sweeping roof canopy will be added, a pedestrian bridge will be built connecting the terminal garage parking facilities to the central terminal, capacity will be increased for security screening with an expanded checkpoint for up to 24 screening lanes, and a new central marketplace with compelling views of the airfield will be constructed.

The new IAF will be constructed on the west side of the terminal with six international aircraft gates and a new Customs and Border Protection (CBP) area.

This facility will allow BNA to attract additional non-stop services to and from Europe, Asia, Latin America and other places.

Hensel Phelps has also been awarded the design-build contract for BNA’s Concourse D and terminal wings expansion, which is underway and is expected to be completed in 2020.

Other projects underway as part of BNA Vision include the Parking and Transportation Center, which will open in December; the terminal apron and taxilane expansion project, which will be completed in two phases with the first to be finished in 2019; and a new terminal parking garage, airport administrative building and pedestrian plaza, set to open in 2020.

Similar to other airport capital improvement projects, no local tax dollars will be used to fundBNA Vision.

BNA Board of Commissioners chair Dexter Samuels said: “This contract award marks the start of the sixth and largest BNA Vision component.

“When complete, this project will provide travelers an expanded and visually engaging terminal lobby as well as a state-of-the-art International Arrivals Facility to accommodate future international flights.

“From a design perspective, we think this will be the most transformative undertaking in the history of this airport.”
