India approves construction of £398m Vaibhavwadi-Kolhapur railway line

August 09, 2019 – The Government of India has approved the construction of a 108km-long railway line between Vaibhavwadi and Kolhapur in the state of Maharashtra.

The project, which secured approval from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affair, involves the construction of 107.76km-long rail line with an estimated investment of INR34.39bn (£398m).

To be constructed by the Construction Organization of Central Railway, the proposed railway line will pass through the districts of Kolhapur, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg, connecting the Kolhapur railway station on the Pune-Kolhapur section with Vaibhavwadi Railway Station on the Roha-Madgaon section.

The new line, which is scheduled to be completed by 2023-24, is expected to reduce the distances for thermal coal transportation benefiting several power plants in Maharashtra and Karnataka.

The Vaibhavwadi-Kolhapur rail route is also expected to benefit the districts of Belgaum, Hubli, Hospet, Bellary, Bijapur, Gulbarga, Latur, Parliand Solapur by offering shorter evacuation route to western ports.

The new line will also offer an additional and shorter alternative route for freight trains operating on existing Vaibhavwadi-Roha-Pune and Miraj-Pune-Panvel-Pen routes.

Vijaydurg port, Gulbarga, Adilabad and other industrial clusters in the region will be able to utilise the Vaibhavwadi-Kolhapur line for better connectivity with the west coast.

The construction of the 150km-long line is estimated to cost INR26.49bn (£306.6m) and is planned to be completed by 2024.
