ITM secures baseline monitoring contract for £1bn Silvertown Tunnel project
November 14, 2018 – ITM Monitoring, a SOCOTEC Group company, has secured a contract from Transport for London (TfL) to provide critical baseline measurements, including manual monitoring of the surrounding assets such as the Emirates Air Line and Docklands Light Railway viaduct, for the £1bn Silvertown Tunnel, a twin-bore road tunnel under the Thames in east London.
The new Silvertown Tunnel will connect the Greenwich Peninsula and Silvertown in east London to provide new public transport links as well as relieve congestion at the Blackwall Tunnel by providing an alternative route between the Royal Docks, Isle of Dogs, Lower Lea Valley and Greenwich Peninsula.
The 1.4km tunnel, which will improve the reliability and resilience of the wider road network, will support growth and the wider economy across the east and south-east London area. Each tube with cross-passages will be approximately 1km long and will carry two traffic lanes.
With Secretary of State’s decision to grant the Development Consent Order (DCO), TfL is now taking up pre-construction works, including baseline structural and environmental monitoring, for the construction phase.
ITM Monitoring will use long-range wireless sensor networks to acquire data and reduce site visits, automatically monitor the Thames level to correlate movement monitoring data with potential tidal influences.
This data will be sent to the client via ITM’s data visualisation portal, Calyx OMS, providing a central repository for instrumentation and monitoring information and automated reporting.
