Kier Highways wins £150m contract for A585 road expansion project
February 29, 2020 – Kier Highways has secured a £150m contract from Highways England for the construction of the A585 road expansion project.
The road project has been awarded to Kier through Highways England’s six-year £8.7bn Regional Delivery Partnership (RDP) framework, in which Kier was appointed in 2018.
The scope of the project will include the construction of a new three-mile dual carriageway bypass to relieve the heavily congested A585 between Windy Harbour and Skippool.
The A585 is the main road in and out of Fleetwood and surrounding areas, with heavy congestion between Windy Harbour and Skippool, causing delay for drivers during peak periods.
Highways England said that congestion is severe at the junction with A586 at Little Singleton and the signalised junction with the A588 at Shard Road.
Additionally, several accidents have been reported and the volume of traffic is also a concern for local people, pedestrians, equestrians and cyclists around the existing A585 and could also support the economic growth potential in Wyre and Fylde.
Therefore, Highways England proposed to build a new offline bypass of the village of Little Singleton, reducing the impact of traffic on the local community and removing a major bottleneck on the road to Fleetwood.
Work on the highway is expected to begin this spring and is due for completion in the summer of 2023.
Kier Highways acting group managing director Joe Incutti said: “This is an important project for our client Highways England, and I am delighted that we are working with them to successfully deliver this strategic scheme.
“We are currently engaging with the local supply chain to utilise existing capability, in parallel with working to enhance skills across the region.”
