Kier selected to deliver $25m Gresham’s STEAM building in UK

January 17, 2020 – UK-based construction firm Kier has been selected as the preferred bidder to deliver Gresham’s School’s new £19m ($24.7m) science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM) facility in Holt, Norfolk.

 

The new STEAM building will feature 4,000m² of teaching space including biology, chemistry and physics labs, maths classrooms, technology workshops including machine room, spray room, welding bay, 3D IT room with 3D printing facilities and computer science classrooms.

 

Planned to be built on the existing school site, adjacent to the Britten building previously constructed by Kier, the building’s arts department features classrooms, screen printing facilities, Kiln, graphics room, photo room including dark room.

 

Kier Regional Building Eastern operations director Dennis Cotton said: “This exciting project has always been a business target, further developing our successful relationship with Gresham’s school. We look forward to engaging with the school during the build process ensuring their operations are not affected in a very sensitive and tight site.”

 

The building, which has been designed by architect Wilkinson Eyre, the building will feature eco-technologies, including ground source heat pumps and photovoltaic panels.

 

The STEAM building is backed by funding from former Gresham’s pupil and Dyson founder James Dyson.
Work on the project is scheduled to commence in spring 2020 and is scheduled for completion in summer 2021.

 

Earlier, Kier served as principal contractor for the Gresham’s School’s Britten building. The project involved construction of a sixth form centre, auditorium, teaching spaces and specialist music facilities which opened in 2017.

 

The STEAM building will be located at the heart of the school site, and adjacent to the music centre, the Britten Building. It will face the Grade II listed Memorial Chapel across the chapel lawns.

 

Recently, Kier was selected by Crawley Borough Council and property investment and development firm Westrock to deliver the new Crawley Town Hall in the UK.
