Lendlease, Samsung JV to build WestConnex motorway link in Australia


November 17, 2018 – The Lendlease Samsung Bouygues Joint Venture (LSBJV), comprising Lendlease Engineering, Samsung C&T and Bouygues Construction Australia (subsidiary of Bouygues Travaux Publics), has won a contract from the New South Wales (NSW) Government in Australia to design and construct the twin 7.5km motorway tunnels for the $12bn WestConnex project in Sydney.

The project achieved financial close in September 2018.


Bouygues Travaux Publics president Jean-Philippe Trin said: “We are proud of the trust shown in us by our customer for the construction of the M4-M5 Link Tunnels of the WestConnex motorway.

“The strength of the consortium formed by Bouygues Construction, Lendlease and Samsung lies in our complementary technical expertise and in our knowledge of the Australian infrastructure market and territory.”

The M4-M5 Link Tunnels are part of WestConnex, an integrated transport plan, in the inner west of Sydney.


Bouygues Construction Australia and its partners are responsible for Stage 3A, which consists of two 7.5km four-lane tunnels linking the M4 East motorway at Haberfield to the New M5 motorway at the St Peters Interchange.

Connecting the M4 tunnel at Haberfield with the M5 at St Peters will create a non-stop underground western bypass of Sydney’s CBD, slashing travel times and delivering open space for local communities.

The M4-M5 Link project will also transform the disused Rozelle Rail Yards into a 10-hectare park with green space, footpaths and cycle ways.

A bridge will be constructed linking the open space at Rozelle to the foreshore parks adjacent to Rozelle Bay at Annandale.

When the 33km WestConnex motorway is completed, it is expected to support the region’s economic and demographic growth by improving the connection between the centre of Sydney and surrounding suburbs.

The NSW Government approved the final stage of WestConnex, linking the M4 and M5 motorways, in April 2018.

Work will commence in late 2018 and is expected to be completed in 2023.
