June, 05 2019 – Swedish construction firm NCC has secured a contract worth about SEK1.4bn (£116.6m) from property developer Bricks to construct a new mixed-use development in Aarhus, Denmark.

The project, dubbed Nicolinehus, will be built in Aarhus Docklands, an emerging neighbourhood between the former city centre and container port area.

Covering an area of 40,000m², the mixed-use project features 181 tenant-owned apartments, 60 rental units and 6,000m² of office space.

As part of the contract, the Swedish firm will be responsible for the construction of a market hall with cafés and stalls, a large grocery store and small stores on street level.

Furthermore, the project will feature restaurants and an area with a swimming pool, as well as a fitness centre and about 450 parking spaces in the basement.

“Nicolinehus will also be a unique construction project comprising two triangular blocks placed closely together, with staggered terraces in buildings up to 17 stories high overlooking the quay from two directions,” NCC said in a statement.

Mogens Nielsen, head of NCC Building Nordics West, Denmark, said: “We are very pleased to be building Nicolinehus. The building will be one of the architectural gems of Aarhus Docklands. As a contractor, we are honored to be involved in the development of Aarhus and to be contributing to some of the city’s most distinctive buildings.”

Earlier, the Swedish construction firm built Isbjerget, Dokk1 and Havneholmen at Aarhus Docklands. Hercules Fundering, a part of NCC, has already commenced laying the foundations for the mixed-use development.

Bricks director Philip Foss said: “This construction project stands out in terms of location, architecture and quality, and will help to make Aarhus more attractive and appealing. A construction on this unique site entails responsibilities. With Nicolinehus, which we are building together with NCC, we are hoping to meet expectations.”

Construction on the project will commence after the summer and is scheduled for completion by 2022.

The total project value will be booked in the NCC Building Nordics business area in the second quarter of 2019
