OHL wins €44.6m contract to expand Spanish Port of Agaete

OHL

August 22, 2018 – Spanish construction and civil engineering company OHL has won a €44.6m contract from Puertos Canarios, affiliated with the Canary Government’s Ministry of Public Works, for the expansion of the Port of Agaete, located on the Gran Canaria Island, Spain.

The project will be taken up in a joint venture and 85% of the amount will be financed by the FEDER European funds.

The contract involves the construction of a 530-metre breakwater with a 45-tonne Cubipod layer and a second alignment of 400 metres of vertical caisson dike.

The work also includes the creation of two berths for ferries, as well as other complementary tasks such as paving, beaconing, means for berthing and mooring, urbanisation and facilities.

The Cubipod, which is being used in countries such as Denmark and Algeria, is an RDI development for the construction of the principal layer in port slope breakwaters.

Major advantages of the Cubipod are its greater structural strength and resistance compared to traditional cubes. It also prevents cobbling and increases the friction with the inferior layer.

This technology has been used in other port projects carried out recently by OHL on the island. These include the construction of a new mooring line parallel to the Nelson Mandela dock, construction of the África dock, specifically in the third phase of the breakwater in 2013, and in the closing harbour wall of the same in 2015, all located in the Port of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria (España).

Previously, OHL Group, through its subsidiary OHL USA, has secured two new projects in California and Texas for €77.8m ($94.7m).

In California, OHL won a €48m ($58m) contract for the Newhope-Placentia trunk sewer replacement project from Orange County Sanitation District (OCSD).

Under the contract, OHL will replace the existing pipeline with a larger diameter sewer pipeline. This phase of the project will replace 6km of sewer, of a total of more than 11km.

In Texas, the company won a €29.8m ($36.7m) contract from the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) for the widening of one-lane roadway from SH45 to US290 (14km) of SH 130. The work includes the construction of 12 bridges (117,000m² of deck), 134,000m² concrete paving, 155,000m³ of excavation and installation of ITS fibre through 24km of duct bank.
