Permasteelisa to develop new smart district in London


August 03, 2018 – Italian company Permasteelisa has won a €70m ($81m) contract to develop Battersea Phase 3A, a new smart district in London as part of the bigger transformation of Battersea Power Station.

The contract involves the design, supply and installation of more than 27,000m² of complex façade that will define the buildings designed by architectural firm Gehry Partners.

The façade, inspired by London’s typical regency style, will have special undulating shape created by the protruding and receding volumes of winter gardens and terraces to take full advantage of the brightness of the buildings.

White aluminium panels for the façade will reflect sun’s rays, lighting the common areas between the buildings. Undulating shape resembling the flowing sails of ships has inspired many of Frank Gehry’s works, including the Walt Disney Concert Hall, created by Permasteelisa.

The Battersea Phase 3A project aims to achieve the BREEAM ‘Excellent’ certification. The visible panels will be equipped with low-E coated, extra-clear glass with high thermal and solar performance to reduce energy consumption and maximise the light coming in.

The design will require 2,900 units with aluminium profile equipped with double-glazed or opaque infill, all different from each other and openable both with a folding or sliding panel.

The façade will require 3,000 aluminium closed infill boxes with a unique and non-repetitive, customised shape, which will create the undulating and sinuous shape.

The design and production of the façade will take 18 months and will involve 70 professionals from the technical office in Italy.

The first panel is expected to be installed in the second quarter of 2019, and the installation will take nearly one-and-a-half years.

Battersea Power Station, situated along the south bank of the River Thames, was designed according to the principles of environmental, economic and social sustainability to offer high-quality residential solutions in the centre of the Nine Elms district.

The area will consist of 4,000 residences, 250 shops, offices, leisure facilities, bars, hotels and restaurants, and seven hectares of public space.
