Plans approved for £40m student housing project in Leeds, UK

Leeds

July 23, 2020 – B&B Pickard (Leeds), part of Pickard Properties, has received planning approval from the Leeds City Council of the UK for a new £40m student housing project.

To be located at Carlton Hill, Lofthouse Terrace, Woodhouse, the 604-bed project will replace 239-bed scheme that was developed by Pickard Properties on the same site in 2001.

The proposals also include an ancillary staff apartment, parking, associated landscaping along with a courtyard and public realm

Pickard Properties said that the design of the project responds to the issues surrounding students’ mental health.

The student housing development will feature larger than standard bedrooms and living spaces. It will incorporate a series of three-storey sky gardens that offer social and common study spaces for clusters of apartments.

Also, the ‘fresh air’ theme will be incorporated at ground floor level through an extensive courtyard and natural interactive spaces.

Pickard Properties director Miles Pickard said:  “We have worked very closely with Leeds University to ensure the design focused strongly on the mental health and wellbeing of students and encouraged social circulation and interaction throughout the accommodation by the inclusion of carefully planned spaces both within the building and externally.

“It is essential that students have safe and secure spaces where they can socialise in addition to their own study bedroom.

“It is also important for the City of Leeds to be able to offer a high standard of accommodation both to students with mainstream accommodation budgets as well as overseas students, who often have more extensive budgets. We want to help forge strong and happy memories of their time in Leeds.”

The project will be executed in collaboration with surveyor/project manager Fox Lloyd Jones Quantity, landscape architects Halliday Clark Architects, Smeeden Foreman; structural engineer Sweco; along with Hoare Lea, Leeds University & Unipol.

Construction is set to commence on site in autumn 2020 after a contractor is appointed. The student housing project is scheduled to be completed in summer 2023.
