Salini Impregilo JV starts tunneling work on Perth rail project

August 04, 2017 – A joint venture (JV) of Italian contractor Salini Impregilo and NRW has commenced tunnelling work on the AUD1.86bn ($1.49bn) Forrestfield-Airport Link project in Perth, Australia.

The tunneling work, which was officially launched by the Premier of Western Australian, Mark McGowan, will seek to ease traffic congestion in Perth by extending the city’s public transport network.

McGowan said: “It is a pleasure to mark the start of the two-year journey these machines will make under our city to deliver this brand new rail corridor.”

The total length of rail line will be 8.5km, of which 8km will be underground. Upon completion, the new rail line will allow residents in the eastern suburbs to travel 20 minutes to the city centre.

Currently two tunnel-boring machines (TBMs) have been deployed at the site. One TBM will excavate the first of two parallel tunnels, as well as three new train stations at Forrestfield, Airport Central and Belmont.

Another TBM will be lowered down a dive structure at the same Forrestfield site in August for assembly and a September start on the other tunnel.

The project is scheduled to be completed in 2020.
