Salini subsidiary wins £170m contract for water treatment project in Argentina
July 01, 2019 – Italian company Salini Impregilo Group subsidiary Fisia Italimpianti has secured a $215m (£170m) contract from Agua y Saneamientos Argentinos (Aysa) for Lot 2 of the Riachuelo engineering and infrastructure project in Buenos Aires, Argentina, to reduce pollution in the Riachuelo River.
The Salini Impregilo Group is already involved in Lot 3 of the Riachuelo system, which is being implemented to combat pollution in the Argentinian capital.
The Riachuelo system is intended to treat 2,332,800m³ of wastewater a day. The World Bank is providing financial support to the $1.2b (£946m) Riachuelo system, which will be completed by 2022.
Fisia Italimpianti is involved in the sustainable design and execution of water treatment and desalination plants globally.
Under the terms of the contract, Fisia Italimpianti will develop a pre-treatment wastewater plant and associated pumping stations within a 36-month period.
The facility will have a capacity of 27m³ per second, making it one of the biggest plants of its kind in the world.
This is the second of three lots of the Riachuelo system and will help improve the environmental conditions of the Matanza Riachuelo River Basin. Riachuelo River is said to be the most polluted in the country.
Work under Lot 2 of the Riachuelo system is expected to ensure flexibility and safety to the water purification system of Buenos Aires, with a direct impact on the health and quality of life of its 4.3 million residents.
Fisia Italimpianti, based in Genoa, has been present in Argentina since 2017.
The company has operations in Saudi Arabia, Oman and the UAE, and enters the South American market for water treatment plants with the Riachuelo project.
According to the UN, around 20% of the global population suffers from water scarcity, and this figure is expected to increase to 40% by 2025. The bank said there is an urgent need to increase the capacity to produce potable water and treat wastewater.
The Salini Impregilo Group and Fisia Italimpianti focus on the development of technology to reduce pollution and supply potable water.
