Skanska bags St Gorans Hospital expansion contract in Sweden

July 04, 2017 – Swedish construction firm Skanska has won a SEK1.3bn ($153.5m) contract from the real estate manager Locum to rebuild and expand St Gorans Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden.

The scope of the project involves the reconstruction of existing hospital buildings and addition of two new buildings that will house facilities for care and treatment, delivery and reception.

The preliminary size is approximately 29,000 sq m of new construction and almost 5,000 sq m of conversion.

The revamped and new buildings will boost the capacity with nearly 6,000 visits, which corresponds to an extension of 62 ward units. Additionally, St Gorans will also accommodate a new maternity department in a new building with room for 4,000 deliveries.

The capacity for acute patients increases from 79,000 to 100,000 visits and the hospital will get an expanded mission in planned care, such as in neurology, infection, pulmonary medicine and urology as well as breast cancer care.

Skanska said that the revamped and newly constructed buildings at the hospital will be certified according to Miljöbyggnad, a certification for new and existing buildings focusing on energy, indoor environment and materials.

Preliminary work has commenced in the first quarter of 2017 while the completion is scheduled during the fourth quarter of 2020.
