July 29, 2017 – Canadian engineering services firm SNC-Lavalin has bagged a contract on the Fine Ash Dam 6 Project in Secunda, South Africa.

The contract has been awarded on behalf of Johannesburg-based chemicals and energy firm Sasol Group Technology.

Pursuant to the contract, SNC-Lavalin will be responsible the structural, mechanical electrical, instrumentation and piping (SMEIP) construction services for the new facility.

The scope of the work also includes installation of nearly 15km of piping, 370 tonnes of steel, and various mechanical and electrical equipment.

In order to support the life extension of the Sasol Secunda operations facilities, the Fine Ash Dam 6 Project aims to build a new ash dam using the ash generated by Sasol’s operations in Secunda while an older dam is decommissioned.

Construction of the project will take place in numerous phases and this contract award is part of the first phase. Fine Ash Dam 6 will be constructed in accordance with the latest environmental requirements. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.

SNC-Lavalin president of oil and gas Martin Adler said: “We are delighted to be awarded work with Sasol, providing solutions to this logistically complex project.

“We are currently mobilizing and at the peak workload expect a team of up to 250. With our strong track record in training and development within the local community, we expect 80% of our craft team members to be from the local area.

“We look forward to executing the first phase and hope to continue working with Sasol through the latter phases of the project.”
