Stanhope breaks ground on Elwick Place mixed-use project in UK
July 19, 2017 – Stanhope has broken ground on Elwick Place, a two-hectare brownfield development site in Ashford town centre after signing an unconditional legal agreement with Ashford Borough Council.
As per terms of the contract, the local council will fund the construction of Elwick Place on its own land.
The mixed-use development includes a new hotel, six-screen cinema, eight restaurants, and 282-space car park on the former Ashford Market site in Kent, UK. Furthermore, it also includes potential residential phase providing up to 200 apartments.
Another company, Travelodge has reached an agreement to manage the new hotel being built that features 58 rooms.
The Elwick Place scheme is one element of a wider £519m of investment in developments in Ashford town centre, which is currently under construction or with construction expected to start within the next five years.
The investment is likely to create approximately 250 jobs, with main contractor Lendlease now also formally appointed as lead contractor. The scheme is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2018.
Stanhope development director Gary Bourne said: “Elwick Place will be a real asset to Ashford, which will significantly enrich the offer of the town centre, particularly in the evening.
“Picturehouse and newly announced Travelodge will attract many new visitors and will enhance Ashford’s leisure and tourism offer, benefiting from the site’s highly sustainable location, very close to Ashford International Station.”
