Strabag wins £135m Czech railway contract


July 06, 2019 – Strabag Rail, a subsidiary of Austrian construction firm Strabag, has secured a contract worth €150m (£134.6m) for the modernisation of a railway section in Czech Republic.

The contract has been awarded by SŽDC, the national railway infrastructure company of Czech Republic, to a consortium of Strabag Rail, Eurovia and Metrostav in which Strabag holds 53.21% of stake.

Pursuant to the contract, the consortium will be responsible for the refurbishment of an 11.3km railway line between Soběslav and Doubí. Work on the project will begin in September and is expected to last for 46 months.

The work also includes completing the 11.3km long double-track line, the connecting the constructed section to the Soběslav railway station. Seven bridge structures will be erected, including two viaducts with a total length of 1,095m.

The Zvěrotický Tunnel with a length of 370m, a telecommunications system and noise barriers with a total length of 1.6km will also be constructed.

The contract will also include the construction of new station platforms dismantling the original single-track line.


Strabag CEO Thomas Birtel said: “We are very pleased to be able to report of our second major order in the Czech Republic this year following the construction of a section of the D35 motorway.”

In June this year, the company started construction of the educational campus Seestadt Aspern Nord in Vienna, Austria.

The consortium of HYPO NOE Leasing and Strabag Real Estate (SRE) had won the contract to design, build, finance and operate the educational campus Seestadt Aspern Nord and the educational campus Aron Menczer.

Scheduled to open in the beginning of 2021/22, the new facility will include a kindergarten with 12 groups, an all-day elementary school with 17 classes and a middle school with 16 classes, for a total of 1,100 children along with a youth centre.

The consortium will share the responsibility of financing the project. Strabag and Siemens Gebäudemanagement & -Services (SGS) will ensure on-schedule construction of the educational facility.
