Swank Construction selected for I-70 bridges upgrade project in West Virginia, US

August 09, 2019 – The West Virginia Department of Transportation in Virginia, US has awarded a contract to Swank Construction to upgrade over two dozen bridges along the Wheeling corridor of Interstate 70 (I-70).

Under the $214.65m contract, Swank Construction will be responsible for the rehabilitation work on 25 bridges along the section of I-70.

The contract announcement was made during a public event at Heritage Port Park in Wheeling by West Virginia Governor Jim Justice.

Justice said: “At the end of the day, there’s no way in the world I could be any happier; our state’s moving. I can’t say this enough times; we’re on it. And our people with Highways are on it.”

The scope of the project also includes the replacement of the Fulton Bridge located to the east of the Wheeling Tunnel.

However, the replacement work for the Fulton Bridge will lead to the closure of the I-70 in that area, due to which travellers will be asked to use I-470 as the primary detour.

Justice added: “Our bridges got in this shape over decades of neglect, decades of being 50th. In all honesty, that’s the problem; when you don’t have any money, you can’t fix anything.”

Scheduled to commence later this year, the project will be carried out in phases with most of the first phase of work planned to take place underneath the structures.

Expected to take at least three years to complete, the I-70 Bridge project aims to enhance the safety of the bridges in the area by fine-tuning their structural integrity, thus enhancing access for pedestrians across the bridges.

Separately, Jim Justice has requested $20m funding for a new project to enhance and develop North Central West Virginia Airport in Bridgeport.

The infrastructure project involves several phases of work, with the first phase involving excavation work to build a new site for a new terminal located directly off I-279.
