Terna to build €415m Italy-France interconnector transmission line

July 07, 2017 – Italian power grid operator Terna has inked an agreement with Interconnector Italia to build and operate private part of the 320kV DC interconnection project that will connect Italy with France.

The €415m Italy-France Interconnector Project is part of Italian Law 99/09, which requested energy-intensive companies to finance and Terna to construct interconnection power lines to help create the single electricity market.

In this context, the Interconnector Italia consortium snapped up the entire capital of Piemonte Savoia, formerly controlled by the Terna Group through Terna Interconnector.

On behalf of the Italy-France Interconnector, Piemonte Savoia owns the exemption right for third-party access (TPA) – for a capacity of 350MW and for 10 years.

The Italy-France Interconnector project is 190km long, equally distributed between Italy and France. The project will provide a total cross-border exchange capacity of 1,200MW, available from 2020.

Upon commencing operation, the connection will offer nearly 40% increase in the electricity trading capacity between Italy and France, in line with the European strategy to boost electricity interconnections between member states aimed at strengthening security of supply and improving market competition.
