Van Oord-Siemens Gamesa selected for €500m Dutch wind farm project

Van Oord

August 08, 2018  –  A consortium of Van Oord and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy has been selected by Windpark Fryslân to construct the €500m Fryslân nearshore wind farm in the Frisian section of the IJsselmeer Lake, next to the Afsluitdijk dam, in the Netherlands.

The wind farm, which will contain 89 wind turbines with a capacity of 4.3MW each, will have a total rated power output of more than 380MW and supply energy for the Province of Friesland.

After the completion of the project, Siemens Gamesa will service the wind farm for at least 16 years.

Van Oord will be responsible for the Balance of Plant work, including design, fabrication and installation of the foundations and cables for the wind project, and will also supply the equipment for installing the turbines.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy will be responsible for the design, fabrication and commissioning of the SWT-DD-130 wind turbines, each with an individual capacity of 4.3MW and a 130-metre rotor diameter, and the onshore substation.

Hub height of the turbines will be 109 metres, with a blade tip height of 174 metres.

The consortium will also construct a nature conservation island adjacent to the Afsluitdijk dam. Two hectares of new land and 25 hectares of sheltered shallow water will be created using soil material from the IJsselmeer Lake.

The island, which will be used during the construction phase, will later be transformed to a nature conservation area.

Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy offshore business unit CEO Andreas Nauen said: “We’re proud to once again bring our Siemens Gamesa direct drive wind turbine technology to the IJsselmeer Lake with the Fryslân nearshore wind farm.

“Partnering with Van Oord allows us to as solid, experienced partners to bring a shared commitment to reducing the Levelized Cost of Energy from offshore wind and providing clean energy to our customer Windpark Fryslân B.V.”

Final contracts are expected to be signed later in 2018. Construction will begin in 2019 and the Fryslân nearshore wind farm is expected to be in full operation by mid-2021.
