Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau wins German light rail line contract
May 27, 2020 – Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau, a group company of BAM, has secured a contract for the construction of two lots of the new U81 light rail line in Düsseldorf, Germany.
The overall value of the contract is €113m, of which Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau’s share is valued at €45m.
The U81 rail line will connect Düsseldorf Central Station with the airport. It is also connected to Messe Düsseldorf.
A portion of the first section of the route in the northern part of the city will lead to the north over existing tracks from Freiligrathplatz.
The new route will cross the Nordstern traffic junction at high altitude and continue towards the airport. Plans will also include building an underground train station at the terminal.
Apart from improving the connectivity to the airport, the U81 subway line will help reduce the traffic in Düsseldorf city centre.
Lot 1 of the construction project has been secured by the bidding consortium Wayss & Freytag, Implenia and MCE, while Lot 2 has been won by a consortium Wayss & Freytag and Implenia.
Wayss & Freytag Ingenieurbau will be responsible for providing technical management services for both lots.
Lot 1 includes the installation of several engineering structures (ramp structures, trough section in high elevation, bridge in the entrance gate 1 area) including the associated foundation work and the construction of an arched steel bridge using the cycle sliding method.
The scope of the work under Lot 1 also includes the construction of the extensive track and undertaking overhead line work as well as the installation of noise barriers.
Lot 2 involves the construction of the excavation pit with back-anchored diaphragm walls, the excavation (partly as underwater excavation) and a ramp and stop in open construction.
Two lots include traffic management and security in all construction phases and intermediate conditions as well as the corresponding road construction and water maintenance work.
The company said that the construction site of the project is located adjacent to Düsseldorf Airport; air traffic and airport operations must not be affected by the construction work.
Construction on the project will commence later this month and is scheduled to be completed in 2023.
Tram operations will be maintained during the various construction phases.
