Western Australia selects Raubex Construction for $62m highway project
August 31, 2020 – The Western Australian Government has selected Raubex Construction as the preferred contractor for the first stage of the A$85m ($62m) Bussell Highway dual carriageway project, a road connecting Capel Bypass and Hutton Road.
During the construction phase, which is expected to begin in October, nearly 570 direct and indirect jobs could be created, boosting the economy in a post-Covid-19 situation.
The 46km section of Bussell Highway, between Bunbury and Busselton, is a four-lane dual carriageway, which includes two lanes in each direction and the two directions are separated by a central median.
The 17km section between Capel and north of Busselton is a two-lane, single carriageway with passing lanes at nearly 5km intervals in each direction.
In stage one, work on the Capel Bypass and Hutton Road will include the construction of the 5km section of carriageway along with the construction on an existing section of the highway, resulting in two lanes in each direction.
The project is being jointly funded with a commitment of A$68m ($50m) from the Australian Government, while the Western Australian Government will contribute A$17m ($12.5m).
As per Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack, the Australian Government has partnered with the Western Australian Government to fast-track and to provide money to regional projects as soon as possible, in order to strengthen the economy.
McCormack said: “Our focus is getting people back into work quickly, which is why we allocated $1.5 billion to prioritise shovel-ready projects and targeted road safety works that can provide a boost to the economy and support jobs immediately.”
“We are continuing to roll out major projects nationwide under our $100 billion infrastructure investment pipeline, laying the foundations for recovery on the other side of Covid-19.”
Plans for stage two are progressing and will include the construction of the remaining 12km section between Hutton Road and Busselton, along with the duplication of three bridges across the Abba, Sabina and Ludlow Rivers.
