Consortium to build second Borssele offshore wind farm

Dec 15, 2016 – A consortium of Shell, Van Oord, Eneco and Mitsubishi/DGE has been awarded a contract to build the second Borssele offshore wind farm in the Dutch North Sea. The €0.3bn wind farm will be the second of five planned wind farms for the Borssele Wind Farm Zone.

Each wind farm will have a capacity of 700MW and will produce electricity for 1M households. Borssele wind farms will be built at 22km from the coast.

Dutch minister of economic affairs Henk Kamp said: “The realisation of the offshore wind farms is a boost for the industry. We expect that by 2020 around 10,000 jobs will be created by these projects. Dutch industry is involved in the construction of almost all offshore wind farms in Europe.

“Last week the government presented the Energy Agenda, which sets out our route towards a low carbon energy supply. The results of this latest tender demonstrates that the energy transition offers ample economic opportunities.”

The five wind farms are expected to be operational by 2023.
