Contract let for 1,055km Australian rail upgrade

July 27, 2017 – A partnership of McConnell Dowell and Martinus Rail has won a contract to convert 1,055km of Australian railway from broad gauge to standard gauge.

V/Line’s AU$440m (£260m) upgrade Murray Basin rail project in the state of Victoria involves standardising and upgrading the freight lines to improve rail access between the Murray Basin and Victoria’s major ports.  The project will increase the allowable train axle loading from 19t to 21t, except for the Ouyen to Murrayville line which remains at 19t.

More than 400 people will be employed on the project at its peak.

“We are ready to maximise the benefits of this substantial investment in Victoria’s rail network, and deliver a safer, more productive rail freight network for V/Line and the people of Victoria,” said Jim Frith, McConnell Dowell managing director – Australia. “Generating local jobs and spending locally will be a key focus of our team and we will be recruiting at least 15 per cent of our workforce from the Murray Basin region.”

Construction is due to begin on site in July, with practical completion scheduled for August 2018.
