Ground broken on 2020 Olympics stadium

2020 Olympics stadium

Dec 16, 2016 – Tokyo has started construction on the new $1.5bn national stadium that will serve as the main venue for the 2020 Olympic Games. Designed by the Japanese architect Kengo Kuma, the stadium will have a wooden lattice design that echoes the traditional styles seen in Japanese temples and pagodas. It is aimed to blend in with the surrounding parkland.

It will feature Japanese-grown larch in its wood and steel composite roof and prefabricated panels to accelerate construction and contain costs.

Work on the stadium fell behind schedule as the Japanese government decided to abandon the original design amid spiralling costs and complaints over its scale and appearance.

Construction work on the project is set to be completed by November 2019.
